Elizabeth Hand is the multiple-award-winning author of numerous novels and three collections of short fiction. She is also a longtime reviewer for many publications, including the Washington Post, Salon, Village Voice, and the Boston Globe, and is a columnist for The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. Illyria, her World Fantasy Award-winning novel inspired by Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, was recently published for the first time in the U.S. Her most recent novel is Available Dark, a sequel to the Shirley Jackson Award-winning novel Generation Loss, is forthcoming, as is a young adult novel about Rimbaud.

Hand is one of several writers with stories in this anthology who comfortably glides between science fiction, fantasy, horror, and mainstream. She’s a writer who follows her own interests (among them, mythic themes and the cost of creation) and thus over the past two decades has written some of the very best horror stories and novellas, including “The Erl-King,” published relatively early in her career.
